“No, ma’am. His car was gone when I got there so I have no idea. I’ll get there even earlier this evening so I won’t miss him.” Hayden was lying through his teeth to Mrs. Poat, but he didn’t care. Kacey’s safety was far more important than her straying husband. “Did he come straight home?”

“Matter of fact, he did,” she answered passively.

That pissed Hayden off. “Mrs. Poat, I asked you to call or text me if that happened. What if I’d been sitting there all evening because I didn’t know he was there?”

“Oh. Right. I should’ve done that. I’ll try to remember.”

“How ’bout this: I don’t see him, I’ll call you. Will that work?” So I don’t waste a whole fucking evening?, Hayden wanted to scream into the phone.

“Sure. That’s fine. Thanks so much, Mr. Patterson, and I hope you get me my money’s worth this evening.” And the phone went dead.

“Bitch,” he muttered under his breath.

“Patterson!”

Hayden darted up the hallway and into Steve’s office. “Yeah?”

“How’s the Poat thing coming?”

“Good, good.”

“Hard to watch him from the Flournoy’s house, huh?” Steve asked, never looking up.

“What?”

Steve’s eyes rotated upward, independent of his downturned face, and the look he gave Hayden from under his brows was scathing as he repeated himself. “Hard to watch him from the Flournoy’s house.”

“How did . . .”

Steve sat up straight and clasped his fingers behind his head. “Really? This is a suhhhhh-currrre-uhhhh-teeee firm. I have my ways. Explanation?”

Hayden could feel his face burning. “Delaina Flournoy called in a panic. Someone tried to break into the apartment with Kacey there alone.”

“So you jumped on your white stallion and raced on over there? Well, Lone Ranger, maybe you should’ve asked Tonto what he thought about that.”

“Sorry.”

Steve grinned. “I’m just bustin’ your balls. But really, get on that Poat thing. It’s a paying gig.” He reached into a desk drawer and pulled out an energy bar. “But I would’ve done the exact same thing. Don’t blame you one bit. And if that had been my kid, I would’ve been glad you dropped everything and showed up to save the day.” He stopped and stared off for a minute. “Wait. That’s Mighty Mouse. I’m getting my analogies mixed up. Or is that a metaphor? I can never keep those straight. I know it’s not a simile . . .” He stopped. “Now I’m just rambling. Lack of sleep.” Then he seemed to snap to. “Anyway, good job, Patterson. Now go do whatever it is you do when you’re waiting to play tag-along with Mr. Poat. Whatever or . . . whoever.” He grinned and stepped to a filing cabinet with his back to Hayden. “Or is that whomever? I can’t ever keep those straight . . .”

Hayden wandered back down the hallway to his office and pulled out the Poat file. There was something that bothered him about the photos he had of Mr. Poat, but he couldn’t put a finger on it. The whole file got slipped into a clear poly file jacket, and Hayden headed to the car.
